The 2018 racing season brought great success for the Bäckmans, as Andreas took a victory in TCR UK and Jessica stood on the podium at the prestigious Brands Hatch circuit. As for the upcoming season, the siblings have signed a deal with the 2017 TCR Europe Team Champions Target Competition, and will drive the Hyundai i30 N TCR.
Andreas and Jessica Bäckman have reached great achievements in karting, rallycross and racing, despite their young age. In 2018 they both competed in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC) and TCR UK, where Andreas took his first race victory and ended the season 3rd in points, while Jessica finished 4th in the TCR UK driver championship. In addition, Andreas reached 4th place at the STCC junior championship – despite missing one race during the season – and Jessica scored a podium finish at the famous Brands Hatch circuit.
“I´m delighted to welcome the youngsters Andreas and Jessica in our team. Both have showed a strong performance in different TCR series. The key will be a good preparation before the first round and I am confident they will be on top from the very first race,” Andreas Gummerer says.
The upcoming season is expected to offer great challenges, not least when getting to know their new racing car – a Hyundai i30 N TCR – and the European tracks, but also in terms of tougher competition.
– “When I started the 2018 season, I never thought that one year later I would be about to compete in one of the best teams, against Europe’s best racing drivers. It will be so exciting to start a new season and develop even more as a driver,” Jessica says.
Both Jessica and Andreas are very excited to compete for such a well-known team as the Target Competition in 2019.
– “The results from recent years show that they are a team to count on for the upcoming season. My efforts during the 2018 season exceeded my expectations for my first year in racing, so it will be very exciting to see what the next season has to offer,” says Andreas Bäckman.
